Michael K. McMahan
Michael K. McMahan’s books include a biographical novel titled A Breach of Faith (1996); a fictionalized memoir called Confessions of a Preacher’s Kid (2001); and a novel about an aging Vietnam veteran: An Act of War (2013). Mr. McMahan is currently working on a sequel to Confessions of a Preacher’s Kid. Last Dance will follow the same characters during a six-month period in 1987.
Mr. McMahan started writing articles for newspapers in his late twenties after graduate school. He was working in government at the time and had many opportunities to write articles for the Winston Salem Journal.
He reads The Wall Street Journal every morning and reads fifty to one hundred books each year, both fiction and non-fiction. He started reading avidly during and after college and is blessed to be married to a reader. His wife, Carla, reads even more books than he does.

Career
Michael (Mick) K. McMahan is the Founder, General Partner, and Managing Partner at Gaston Capital Partners. Mr. McMahan has more than thirty-five years of experience managing investment portfolios and working with small businesses and has successfully managed hundreds of millions of dollars in client assets since 1984. He has been listed in Barron’s as one of the top 100 independent financial advisers in the country.
He spent much of his financial career writing columns and articles about business and finance. A Certified Financial Planner with extensive training and experience in estate planning, investments, and taxes, he wrote a weekly column for The Gaston Gazette for many years and published columns in many other regional and national publications. including The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Times.
He holds a B.A. with Honors in Economics and a Masters in Public Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and he has numerous certifications and continuing education in financial planning and investment management.
Veteran
A Vietnam veteran, Mick attained the rank of Captain in the US Army. He was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in combat on November 6, 1968 and he also received the Bronze Star, the Air Medal, and many other medals and citations during his military career.
Mick is a gifted and sought-after public speaker. He often speaks to veterans and others on Veterans’ Day and Memorial Day. His speech entitled “The Legacy of Vietnam” has been well received and vigorously applauded.
Family
Husband to his high school sweetheart, Carla, since 1966, Mick has two children and four grandchildren. He lives in Gastonia, North Carolina, the city of his birth and the place where he has spent most of his life.
